"There is no job that is America's God-given right anymore."
Carly Fiorina, CEO of Hewlett-Packard (HP). January 7, 2004

On March 7 Carly Fiorina joined the Republican National Committee as
Victory Chairman. A week later Meg Whitman, the outgoing CEO of Ebay,
became McCain’s campaign co-chair. Talk about stacking the deck!

A recent youtube video shows both McCain and Meg Whitman voicing their
support for more H-1B visas. Meg Whitman said, "I'm a huge fan of
increasing H-1B visas", while McCain said, "I support increases in H-1B
visas".

Whitman joins Fiorina on McCain presidential campaign trail

Retiring eBay Chief Executive Meg Whitman is joining the presidential
campaign of John McCain as a national co-chair. Whitman, who steps down
from her eBay job at the end of the month, had been a major fundraiser for
Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who dropped out of the
Republican race last month.

Whitman is the second high-profile Silicon Valley businesswoman to land a
key job boosting McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee.

Last week, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, who campaigned for
McCain in the primaries, was tapped to lead the Republican National
Committee's fundraising efforts to aid McCain's November campaign and will
continue on the road touting his economic agenda.

"I'm honored that Senator McCain has asked me to become a part of his
campaign," Whitman said in a statement. "America needs John McCain's
courageous leadership."

Interestingly, both Whitman and Fiorina have been mentioned as possible GOP
candidates for California governor in 2010. And both, no doubt, would be in
line for influential Washington jobs should McCain win.

As national campaign co-chair, Whitman, a billionaire, will not only help
McCain raise money but also work on developing policy and travel the
country on his behalf.

That's a fairly active role for someone who has downplayed interest in her
own political future.

At a San Jose City Hall event Tuesday honoring her decade-long

leadership of the online auction giant, Whitman was asked about that. She
replied, "Frankly, I have so many other interests at this juncture."
And asked in January about a possible run for governor, she laughed at the
notion, calling herself a private person. At the time, speaking of her role
in the Romney campaign, she said, "That's the extent of my political
activity."

TOO MUCH PUB: When former Taipei mayor and current Taiwan presidential
candidate Ma Ying-jeou visits Silicon Valley, his Cupertino sister puts out
the Do Not Disturb sign.

It's not that Lee-Chun Ma doesn't love her big brother. She does. In fact,
the Agilent Technologies marketing and product manager is in Taiwan to
support him before next Saturday's presidential election.

But the soft-spoken Lee-Chun Ma prefers to stay out of the limelight. And
Ma Ying-jeou, known for his movie-star good looks in Taiwan - women are
known to fawn over his "sexy" runner's legs - tends to draw a crowd
everywhere he goes.

"We try not to go out with him; there is too much publicity," she admitted.
"My life is my life. I'm helping out with the campaign because he's my
brother. But I also want to keep my life private."

In past visits to the Bay Area, Ma would stay with his sis. After a run,
they'd go for a traditional Taiwanese breakfast at a local Chinese shopping
area. And they'd be mobbed. "They want to take pictures of him. They want
to say hello," she said.

Finally, she told him, "It's easier if you stay in a hotel."

McCain Embraces Tech Executives For White House Push - TechCrunch
Interviews Carly Fiorina

Michael Arrington

MA: Let’s switch issues. I could talk about China for hours and I’m
sure you could as well. But I’d like to talk about something I know
you’re probably very familiar with - it’s H-1B Visas. And the problem
is H-1B Visas obviously allow us being Silicon Valley and other startup
companies to get educated foreign workers for a period of time to work
legally in the United States. The problem with the issue is that obviously
immigration as a larger issue is a very touchy subject in the US right now,
one that Senator McCain talked in our interview about him being personally
burned by it. He was hesitant to throw his weight behind an expansion of
the H-1B Visa program which currently only allows 65,000 workers per year
into the U.S. Speaking personally, what do you think the right thing to do
H-1B Visas is? And assuming you like the program, is there a way that we
can split the issues and convince the American public that H-1Bs are good?

CF: I think first of all the H-1B Visa program is very important to the
technology industry. The American people get concerned and understandably
emotional about it when they perhaps don’t understand the differences
between the H-1B Visa program and illegal immigration. So we have to make
these differences clear because as McCain said, illegal immigration is a
hugely emotional issue and it’s a very difficult issue in a state like
California. So we have to be very open and specific about why the H-1B Visa
program bears no resemblance to illegal immigration. We also then have to
recognize that American workers all over this country are increasingly
concerned about their ability to compete against foreign workers, whether
those foreign workers are outside our country or whether they’re coming
into our country. And I think that’s why McCain is so smart and so right
to focus a lot of our platform on worker retraining. For example, to say
"you know what we cannot leave workers behind in this country. We can’t
have workers in their most productive years get laid off from a job
that’s never coming back and not give them an opportunity to build new
skills. And so I think If we can lay out for the American people a robust
worker retraining program that really does give people an opportunity to
compete for the new innovative jobs then they will have a different context
in which to think about the H-1B visa program. If we don’t do that, I’m
afraid people will say, "Well here’s another example of foreigners taking
a job away from me." But it’s clear to me that the H-1B Visa program is
important and we have to continue to expanding it if we want our
information technology industry to be the most competitive in the world.

MA: And in particular so many entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley were born
somewhere other than the United States. And as many of those people as we
can get to move here, whether it’s to go to school and here and work here
or just start their companies here, it’s good for our economy. And I
understand it’s a sensitive issue but"

CF: Well it’s good for our economy as you point out and I think the other
thing we need to remind people of is that this country has been built on
hardworking people who want to make a better life for themselves and their
family coming here and staying here. And so it’s in our interest, as you
point out, that people come here and choose to stay here and become
American citizens and contribute to a productive economy.
